Performance Investigation of a Quasi-Optical NbN HEB Mixer at Submillimeter Wavelength

چکیده
In this paper, the performance of a quasi-optical phonon-cooled NbN superconducting hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer is thoroughly investigated. The variation of the receiver noise temperature and the conversion gain around 600 GHz with respect to DC bias voltage and LO pumping level has been measured. The lowest receiver noise temperature is 750 K and reduced to about 250 K after correcting the quasi-optical losses before the HEB mixer. We compared the measured results with the predictions according to one dimensional distributed hot spot model. A reasonable match between theoretical model and experiment is observed. In addition, the direct response of the HEB mixer (integrated with a log-periodic spiral antenna) is measured by using Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS). The stability of the receiver is also investigated by means of Allan variance time measurements performed with an intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth of 40 MHz.

NbN Hot Electron Bolometric Mixer with Intrinsic Receiver Noise Temperature of Less than Five Times the Quantum Noise Limit
In recent years, improvements in device development and quasi-optical coupling techniques utilizing planar antennas have led to a significant achievement in low noise receivers for the edges of the submillimeter frequency regime. Hot Electron Bolometric (HEB) receivers made of thin superconducting films such as NbN have produced a viable option for instruments designed to measure the molecular ...
متن کاملQuasi-optical submillimeter-wave SIS mixers with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions
We report on low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region for the first time. The receiver consists of the quasi-optical NbN SIS mixer with an integrated tuning circuit in which a radial short stub tuner is incorporated to resonate out the junction capacitance for RF matching and a balanced IF circuit for broadband IF matching. The prepared NbN ...

Based on the excellent performance of NbN HEB mixer receivers at THz frequencies which we have established in the laboratory, we are building a Terahertz REceiver with NbN HEB Device (TREND) to be installed on the 1.7 meter diameter AST/RO submillimeter wave telescope at the Amundsen/Scott South Pole Station. TREND is scheduled for deployment during the austral summer season of 2002/2003. The f...
متن کاملOptical Investigation of ultra-thin NbN films for phonon-cooled Hot-Electron-Bolometers (HEB)
We investigate ultra-thin NbN films by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman spectroscopy. These measurements give important information on thickness dependent structural properties and phonon density of states. Thus first steps towards a microscopic understanding of the physics of phonons in these films and their coupling to the substrate can be made. As an ultimate goal we search to r...
متن کاملIF Impedance and Mixer Gain of Hot-Electron Bolometers
We have measured the frequency dependent IF impedance and mixer conversion gain of a small area NbN hot-electron bolometer (HEB). The device used is a twin slot antenna coupled NbN HEB mixer with a bridge area of 1 μm x 0.15 μm, and a critical temperature of 8.3 K. In the experiment the local oscillator (LO) frequency was 1.300 THz, and the intermediate frequency (IF) 0.05-10 GHz. We find that ...
